If you’ve ever wondered about the pros and cons of mouth taping for better health or sleep, this article in the online Wall Street Journal gives a good overview. It was a bit jarring initially to see my face with taped lips on the front page of the Wall Street Journal. But as long as the message of the potential benefits of mouth taping is spread to as many people as possible, I’m pleased with this article.

  1. I’m a retired sleep medicine dentist. Been doing this practice for a long time while wearing an oral appliance for moderate sleep apnea. I use to be very severe but after losing 35 pounds my apnea improved. I did well with using an oral appliance for my severe positional apnea for nearly 20 years. I find taping vastly improves the amount of deep snd REM sleep. This is particularly important for someone over 65 years old. My sleep is amazing and the nitric oxide production from nasal breathing has a positive benifit for my high blood pressure and type II diabetes. Highly recommend mouth taping.

  2. I started taping my mouth at night in 2013 after I discovered the Buteyko Breathing technique, especially books by Patrick McKeown. My chronic allergies have been severely reduced. I used to take Claritin almost daily, and I have not taken one, or any other allergy medication, for nearly a decade. I am 72. I cover my mouth with a small piece of cloth tape when I sleep, and I try to breath through my nose at all times when I am awake. I agree with you that opponents of taping one’s mouth at night are being way too cautious. As you said, when something comes up — such as a sneeze — I simply rip the tape off and then put it back on. Nasal breathing can also help lower blood pressure, as James Nestor discovered.
