If you can't tolerate CPAP, then what's recommended is a good option, especially if you can't use CPAP. Unfortunately, without examining you, I can't give you a more definitive opinion. Good luck.

If your son has large tonsils and adenoids, it's probably a good idea to remove them. I know Dr. Hartnick very well—he's one of the best pediatric ENTs in the country. We also trained together during residency. Knowing what we know about the effects of untreated sleep apnea on a child's brain development, anything to help your son to breathe better at night is a good thing. Removing tonsils and adenoids helps significantly in most children (about 2/3), but not all. Even if it doesn't help, there are ways to treating this problem, since it's due to jaw underdevelopment. Yes, your tonsils are involved with your immune system, but not breathing due to large tonsils is a more important consideration. See what Dr. Hartnick has to say. Good luck.

Jim,

Unfortunately, genioglossus advancement procedures must be done under general anesthesia. Some surgeons are still performing Somnoplasty in the office under local anesthesia, but this must be performed 4-5 times for best results. Recently, tongue reduction procedures using Coblation technology is being used with good results.
