August 4, 2011
In this Ask Dr. Park Teleseminar, I answer the following questions:
- Why don’t I feel better on CPAP?
- How long do I have to wait before feeling better on CPAP?
- What’s the best PAP machine for sleep apnea or UARS?
- What’s the difference between flow limitations and RERAs?
- What is the best surgical option for sleep apnea?
- Can nasal surgery cure sleep apnea?
- Is waking up early in the morning everyday around the same time an indication of sleep apnea?
- I was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (AHI 36-40) but do not snore. Might this mean there is some other cause?
- Plus much more….

Got something to say?

I have developed a simple, reusable nasal insert that significantly decreases upper airway resistance better than any other passive device yet tested. It works by reshaping the nostrils from an oval to circular shape, thus maximizing airflow both during inspiration and expiration. It iscomfortable and stays inserted securely without adhesives or straps. I would be happy to supply samples for you in return for your opinion. I have 3 different sizes (S, M and L), one of which may fit the majority of people. By the way, I have bought your book: Sleep Interrupted and have recommended it to many people involved with sleep apnea.

How can any treatment of sleep apnea, which invairably leaves residual apneas, be considered satisfactory or successful treatment? Shouldn’t the goal of all forms of treatment be the elimination of all apneas?
An article titled “Effects of Oropharyngeal Exercises on Patients with Moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome” was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (vol 17), sometime in 2009. Do you know of any follow up research or articles responding to this study? Also can you tell me how I can obtain a detailed description of these speech therapy exercises so I can try them myself?
Thanks,
Robert Bardin
Mr. Bardin,
If you look up the article in the journal, there is a link to a series of videos that describe the specific exercises. There are numerous ongoing other ongoing studies, but yet to be published.
A simpler option is to try tongue a tongue exercises program produced by Janet Bennet, at ijustwanttosleep.com. Good luck.
Can Provent be used for UARS? If so, can it be tried and if not tolerated or not helpful, stopped without causing harm or making the UARS worse than before the trial of Provent? The AHI score is under .4 but arousals per hour of 33, so unsure if this is needed or would be helpful. Thank you.
Lin, Provents have a very wide indication. Although not specifically tested for UARS, it can be tried and removed with ease if not helping.
